Mechanisms

How it works

Insectaway products use three mechanisms and nothing else: an ultrasonic sweep from 25 to 65 kHz, a 365–395 nm UV-A light with a fan and adhesive board, and low-toxicity formulations such as 20% picaridin and plant-based coils. The barriers run continuously and kill nothing; the trap removes what is already indoors; the formulations handle skin and outdoor air. This page gives the honest limit of each one — including the cases where the honest answer is that a device will not solve your problem and a screen repair will.

Mechanism 01

Ultrasonic sweep

Many flying and crawling insects navigate with pressure and vibration sensors that sit well above the range humans hear. A repeller pushes a continuous sweep of 25–65 kHz into the room, cycling three modes — low, mid and wide — so the signal never settles into predictable background.

What it does well: makes a room less comfortable as a resting place, continuously, with no consumables. What it does not do: kill anything, or pass through walls. Coverage is line-of-sight within a room, which is why our set ships six units rather than one.

Phototaxis

Flies and mosquitoes steer by light, and their eyes peak at wavelengths our eyes barely register. A 365–395 nm UV-A LED looks dim to you and brilliant to them. The trap pairs that wavelength with a quiet fan that pulls the arriving insect onto an adhesive board — nothing cracks, nothing has to be emptied out of a tray.

Position matters more than power. A trap competing with a bright ceiling light will lose. A trap in a dim corner of the room where flies already gather will fill its board in a week.

Mechanism 03

Barrier and formulation

Outdoors, none of the above applies. A patio has no walls to bounce a signal off and no ceiling to hang a trap from. So outdoor control goes back to first principles: a slow-burning coil that puts a repellent plume around the seating area, and a picaridin spray on skin where the plume does not reach.

The third layer is the least glamorous and the most effective: patching the hole in the screen and sealing the gap under the door. It is also the cheapest thing on this site.

What we will not claim.

We do not say "eliminates"

No consumer device clears an infestation. If you have a nest or a persistent problem indoors, professional pest control is the right call and we will say so.

We do not quote percentages

Efficacy figures depend on species, room size, airflow and season. A single number on a box would be marketing, not information.

We do not sell fear

Most of what people want is a quieter evening and a screen that is not torn. That is a reasonable thing to want, and it does not need a scare story.
